About Us

The Wirral Recorder Orchestra was founded in September 1998 by Diane Barton, to encourage recorder players from all over the North West to play in an orchestral setting.

The WRO's first concert was held at the Hamilton Memorial United Reformed Church, Claughton, Birkenhead on 8th May 1999.

The instrumentation consists of 2 sopraninos, 6 descants, 9 trebles, 13 tenors, 10 basses, 4 great basses and 3 contra basses. In most pieces descants, trebles, tenors and basses divide into 2 parts. The music played ranges from Renaissance to Modern and includes original compositions and arrangements.

We perform 2 concerts a year, with soloists, which have included tuba, organ, sopranino recorder and cathedral choristers.

Rehearsals are held monthly on Saturday afternoons at the Hamilton Memorial U.R.C. Map

Conductor Grace Barton studied recorder at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Reine-Marie Verhagen and Historical Performance Practice with Peter van Heyghen.  She has performed regularly as a soloist and with  the Paradisi Ensemble, Birmingham Baroque and La Sprezzatura.  She now performs with the recorder trio Polyphonica.  She teaches recorder at Birmingham Conservatoire.
Grace is a tutor on the Northern Recorder Course and directs various recorder orchestra residential and day courses.  She is Director of the Heart of England Recorder Orchestra and since 2005 has been Director of the Wirral Recorder Orchestra.

Founder conductor Colin Martin directed us from 1998 until his retirement in 2005. Together with Dennis Bamforth, he founded the Northern Recorder Course, which has run since 1966.
